Jeffrey Archer: The Selected Short Stories
Jeffrey Archer - 1999
Millions of readers around the world have relished Jeffrey Archer's short stories. His first collection, A Quiver Full of Arrows, was acclaimed by The Times as 'stylish, witty and entertaining." Of his second collection, A Twist in the Tale, the New York Times said: 'Jeffrey Archer plays a subtle cat-and-mouse game with the reader in twelve original stories that end, more often than not, with our collective whiskers twitching in surprise.' His third, Twelve Red Herrings, was described by the Daily Mail as 'an exemplary collection of short stories.'
The Day of the Locust
Nathanael West - 1939
Nathanael West's Hollywood is not the glamorous "home of the stars" but a seedy world of little people, some hopeful, some despairing, all twisted by their by their own desires -- from the ironically romantic artist narrator, to a macho movie cowboy, a middle-aged innocent from America's heartland, and the hard-as-nails call girl would-be-star whom they all lust after. An unforgettable portrayal of a world that mocks the real and rewards the sham, turns its back on love to plunge into empty sex, and breeds a savage violence that is its own undoing, this novel stands as a classic indictment of all that is most extravagant and uncontrolled in American life.
The Foursome
Troon Mcallister - 2000
He now presides over Swithen Bairn, an exquisite secret golf course that’s a kind of twisted Fantasy Island where the arrogant and pompous find their cherished dreams suddenly transformed into their worst nightmares. When four enviably successful business/golf junkies are lured to Swithen Bairn by an irresistible offer— "the most memorable golf vacation you ever had or you don't pay" —the old adage that you can learn more about people during one round of golf than you can by living next door to them for six months comes hilariously and powerfully true.Mixing equal parts of suspense, hilarity, and raw human drama, Troon McAllister deftly shows readers what can happen when money, friendship, ambition, and greed converge explosively in a single round of golf.
Promises of London
Hugh Howey - 2014
It can be read in ten minutes. Please don't purchase this expecting a novel for your dollar. This story was written in a small cafe on the corner of Bleeker and Grove in New York City on Tuesday, May 27th. The idea came to me yesterday while walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw the locks on several of the small cables on the bridge. I remembered my time in both London and Paris, taking pictures of all the love locks on bridges there. And I thought about all the couples those locks represent. I wondered how many are still together.Maybe this story isn't worth your dollar. If I could price a work on Amazon for less, I would. It is what it is. I hope this will be the first of many short pieces that I write and publish in a single day while recording what I'm thinking and where I am when I write them. For those who take the plunge, I hope you get your money's worth. Thank you for all of your support.-Hugh
Blue Movie
Terry Southern - 1970
The story line follows the celebrated cinematic auteur Boris Adrian, "King B", who undertakes The Faces of Love, an episodic film with high budget production values that will explicitly depict the range of human sexual experience. The filmmaker is loosely based on Stanley Kubrick. Southern, who collaborated with Kubrick on Dr. Strangelove, dedicated the book "To the great Stanley K." It received only moderate reviews. Sales were hampered by the refusal of the NY Times to run ads for the book. A hilarious, wildly erotic & biting satire of Hollywood, Blue Movie tells the story of an Oscar-winning director who's determined to shoot the dirtiest & most expensive X-rated movie ever made; Sid Krassman, a producer who's made a fortune catering to the tastes of the American public, & Angela Sterling, a misunderstood sex symbol who'd give anything (& everything) for a chance to do something "serious." The set is fraught with monstrous egos & enormous libidos--the kind of situation that could only come from the imagination of the irrepressible Terry Southern. A film adaptation of Blue Movie is currently in production from director Michael Dowse & producer Marc Toberoff, to be released by Vertigo Films.

They laugh together, have lunch together, and get together once a week at the Candy Kitchen to eat ice cream and talk about important issues. Life isn't always fair, but at least they have each other -- and all they really want to do is survive the seventh grade. That turns out to be more of a challenge than any of them had anticipated. Starting with Addie's refusal to say the Pledge of Allegiance and her insistence on creating a new political party to run for student council, the Gang of Five is in for the ride of their lives. Along the way they will learn about politics and popularity, love and loss, and what it means to be a misfit. After years of getting by, they are given the chance to stand up and be seen -- not as the one-word jokes their classmates have tried to reduce them to, but as the full, complicated human beings they are just beginning to discover they truly are.
