Some are long, other mere vignettes; some are moving and serious, others are light-hearted even humorous. Some cover hard-won victories and success, others defeats and reversal; some describe acts of great valor, others incidents reflecting human frailties. Tina was kept being put in hostels but kept absconding from them. She had a relationship with Alan and had his child but he denied it was his because his mother told him Tina had an affair with a black man and the baby was black. She met Dan and got into a relationship with him, she had his child and he ended up beating her. Tina married Keith who took on the two eldest children as his own. Tina found him out to be a serial adulterer and had a messy divorce with him going for custody of Naomi and not the other four. Tina married Omar, an Egyptian. He took her into hospital for an operation and after she came round they told her she had cervical cancer. Omar disappeared and came back two days later with no explanation where he’d been, and when she came home no one had seen him for a week. She phoned his friends to find out if they had seen him, they told her that he’d gone back to Egypt for a couple of weeks because his family needed him. The marriage lasted for another two years and eventually ended in divorce. Tina found out her abuser - her father - was in hospital dying with cancer. She went to make sure he was dying and ask him why he did what he did? She went to his funeral just to make sure he was dead and buried. As she passed his coffin she spat on it. Twenty-five years later the truth came out. Tina wasn’t a victim anymore, but the truth divided the family.      I include my own thoughts about bravery and what it takes to fly into a HOT Landing Zone and hoover there while determined well-trained warriors do their best to shoot you down. You might have wondered if You have the courage to do that? I believe You do, but you havn't been in a situation where that level of courage was needed. You would be amazed to know the level of YOUR courage when the circumstances call for you to stand up, and like many of us who went through our fear and shot back at the enemy trying to kill us, combat, took on an almost holy quality. The desire to kill your enemy can be a big part of PTSD, many warriors felt it and some even feel it today. Because it was so powerful I discuss it through out the book.

    I lost my brother at a young age, who was just two years younger than me. After his death I suffered at the hands of bullies who laughed and taunted me over his death. I hated my life and the people around me. I wanted out of my city to build a new life with a fresh start but the death of my brother and the impact it had on me, caused me to fail my education. How could I leave the city I hated now? I joined the Armed Forces at the age of 17 and served almost 12 years in a career that saw me lose nine friends. I was blown up twice and after the first IED I continued to lead by example on the frontline unknowingly suffering from a broken neck and surviving on just pain killers. The second IED just over a month later almost killed me, I died in the air above Helmond Province onboard a Military Helicopter and became the first British Soldier serving in Afghanistan to be surgically operated on whilst in the air. I suffered serious life changing injuries which has also left me suffering with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and severe depression. I wrote the book because I became so fed up with my pain and depression made worse by the lack of help and support that I hated waking up every morning and breathing the air. 2018 saw a large rise in Veteran PTSD related suicides – which has continued to spiral into 2019 and I could have been another.
