    But a Masquerade Ball changes everything. Darcy Unmasked is a Pride and Prejudice Variation. It is approximately 38,000 words, which is a long novella or short novel.

    Darcy and Elizabeth's first year of marriage continues in Volume II of A Marriage Worth the Earning where both husband and wife struggle with more than their fair share of difficulties.

    At least Mr. Bennet trusts he does. Seeing the potential of a good match for his beloved Lizzy but knowing her ability to hold a grudge, he puts a plan into action that forces a marriage between Darcy and Elizabeth. Trapped in a compromise, Elizabeth Bennet has no choice but to accept the proposal of a man she is not entirely sure she likes. On the advice of her sister, she begins to question all she has heard about Mr. Darcy. When she realizes that she has been seriously mislead about his character, she then begins to examine her own heart. What she finds there is unfamiliar. Could these strange feelings be the beginning of love as her aunt suggests? Is it possible that she can find happiness with her father's choice?

    Smoke soon seeps into the room, rapidly turning the event from frivolous to dire. Determined to save everyone, Darcy enlists Elizabeth’s aid in urging the disbelieving assemblage to depart. Darcy and Elizabeth prove as noble as one might expect, but who else will rise to the ranks of hero, who will escape the fire, and who will perish? When the smoke clears, what will become of those who escaped the fire at Netherfield Park? This Pride and Prejudice variation has approximately 70,000 words.

    This variation looks at what might have happened, had those events gone differently, and, as the title suggests, what the reason behind some of the changes might have been. Could Jane turn down Mr Collins? What if Wickham had proposed to Elizabeth before she knew his character? And could anyone resist Colonel Fitzwilliam, had he been in possession of a good fortune? This story follows the original, more or less, and does not contain any material of an explicit adult nature.
