The Association
Sharon Ann Ziegler - 2018
Yet she knows she needs to get back in the legal game, even though it won’t be easy. Now discouraged and out of practice, she must start fresh, with new determination and new clients.Through an acquaintance, she meets the Wainrights, an older couple living in Covington Commons, a cluster of three neighborhoods advertised as a luxury lakeside community. In truth, though, such a description only applies to one neighborhood in Covington Commons: Eagle’s Nest. Both Mockingbird Heights and Peacock Plains have become sad displays of utter neglect, in awful disrepair after years of inattention. The Wainrights need her help to prove allegations as to the person—or persons—responsible for it. After painstaking research into claim after claim, she soon realizes the obviously guilty party. At the forefront, is the Association—the board and committee members who oversee everything and every decision at Covington Commons. Its members have taken what was once a decent organization and turned it into an operation based entirely on corruption and dishonesty that operates according to the whims and greed of only a privileged few. With prejudicial and biased purveyors of justice at the helm, prior lawsuits against the Association have been routinely dismissed early on. Our attorney heroine must find it within herself to navigate and succeed in a world where grossly confident men grandstand in gold jewelry, private investigators are always listening, and judges are not honorable—a world where people aren’t at all who they seem to be.

Wrongful Death: The AIDS Trial
Stephen Davis - 2006
If you ever knew someone with AIDS or HIV, you need to read this book. If you still believe the government and the FDA are protecting you against deadly diseases and dangerous drugs, you must read this book! "WRONGFUL DEATH: The AIDS Trial" is a work of fiction based on fact: the true story behind the government lies and incompetence, gross medical malpractice, and unbridled greed by a drug company that caused our American AIDS epidemic and cost 300,000 lives in just ten years.Follow along with attorney Benjamin Messick and health reporter Sarah Meadows in this class-action lawsuit as they expose the man who claims to have discovered the cause of AIDS, Dr. Robert Gallo. Dr. Gallo announced to the world at a press conference on April 23, 1984 that a virus later to be called HIV was the culprit. Unfortunately, Dr. Gallo’s peers were never given the chance to prove his theories, and still can’t to this day. In the last twenty years, Dr. Gallo has been exposed as nothing more than a common criminal, a thief, and a liar. He finally admitted he had stolen the AIDS virus from a French researcher. He also stole another virus from the Japanese. He lied on his patent application for the HIV blood test. A congressional investigation found Dr. Gallo guilty of “intellectual recklessness of a high degree,” and the Office of Research Integrity of the Department of Health and Human Services found Dr. Gallo guilty of scientific misconduct and called some of Dr. Gallo's key AIDS research, “of dubious scientific merit” and “really crazy.” As one German scientist put it, Dr. Gallo is “an American scientific gangster who has committed so many crass, self-aggrandizing blunders…that he could not really be relied upon to tell the time correctly.”Attorney Messick questions a number of witnesses who all agree with 2700 of the world’s leading doctors and medical researchers today, including Nobel Prize winners in chemistry and medicine and members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, that HIV cannot cause AIDS. At the end of the book you'll find out what actually DOES cause AIDS.The testimony in this court case finally discloses that in the decade from 1987 to 1997, three-hundred-thousand Americans (mostly homosexual men) died NOT from some horrible disease they caught from a virus, but as a result of taking the very drug they were told would cure them. Urged on by their doctors, parents, families and loved-ones, these HIV-positives took AZT, a drug originally designed and created in 1964 to kill cancer cells, but never approved because it was found to be far too toxic to a human body.Read the testimony of witness after witness - all based on over 900 actual medical and scientific research papers and reports - that when the FDA finally approved AZT for the treatment of AIDS in 1987, it began causing Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome; and every person who took it - healthy or not at the time - would die within three years from one of many different opportunistic diseases. Be prepared for the anger and outrage you will feel when you realize that hundreds of thousands of innocent women and children are still being murdered today in Africa with AZT, simply because they have been declared to be HIV-positive, while the drug company rakes in billions of dollars in profits. The question remains: After 30 years and 300 billion dollars, why don't we have a cure or a vaccine for AIDS? The witnesses in this court case provide the only answer that makes any sense: We have the wrong cause."I enjoyed the book. It read like a cross between a John Grisham legal thriller and an informative scientific treatise on AIDS."- D.
The Anatomy of Deception
Lawrence Goldstone - 2008
What they see takes their breath away. Within days, one of them strongly suspects that he knows the woman’s identity…and the horrifying events that led to her death. But in this richly atmospheric novel–an ingenious blend of history, suspense and early forensic science–the most compelling chapter is yet to come, as young Ephraim Carroll is plunged into a maze of murder, secrets and unimaginable crimes....Dr. Ephraim Carroll came to Philadelphia to study with a leading professor, the brilliant William Osler, believing that he would gain the power to save countless lives. As America hurtles toward a new century, medicine is changing rapidly, in part due to the legalization of autopsy–a crime only a few years before. But Carroll and his mentor are at odds over what they glimpsed that morning in the hospital’s Dead House. And when a second mysterious death is determined to have been a ruthless murder, Carroll can feel the darkness gathering around him–and he ignites an investigation of his own.Soon he is moving between the realm of elite medicine, Philadelphia high society, and a teeming badlands of criminality and sexual depravity along the city’s fetid waterfront. With a wealthy, seductive woman clouding his vision, the controversial artist Thomas Eakins sowing scandal, and the secrets of the nation’s powerful surgeons unraveling around him, Carroll is forced to confront an agonizing moral choice–between exposing a killer, undoing a wrong, and, quite possibly, protecting the future of medicine itself….
Past the Headlands
Garry Disher - 2001
The fall of Malaya and Singapore and the bombing of Darwin—what looked like the invasion of Australia—ebb and crash over a man’s long search to find a home and a woman’s determination to keep hers, connected by old memories and new betrayals. It is a thriller and a romance, a story of earth and water, air and metal—an unforgettable ride through the most precarious time in our region's recent history. Garry Disher writes: ‘Past the Headlands came from the same World War 2 research as The Stencil Man. I was struck by the power of two documents. The first was a letter written by a woman alone on a cattle station near Broome in 1942, at the time the Japanese were overrunning Malaya and Singapore and bombing areas of northern Australia. One day she found herself giving shelter to Dutch colonial officers and their families, who were fleeing Sumatra and Java ahead of the Japanese advance (many people like them lost their lives when Japanese planes shot up their waiting seaplanes in Broome Harbour in March, 1942). This woman stuck in my head (the isolation, the danger, the efforts to communicate, her bravery, etc). The second document was a war diary written by an Australian army surgeon who escaped Singapore ahead of the Japanese and was stuck in Sumatra, trying to get out. Here he treated many of the civilians (and Australian Army deserters) fleeing from Singapore. He was captured by the Japanese, but survived the war. But his last few diary entries detail how he and a mate were waiting for a plane or a ship to take them out, then one day he wrote, “Davis [his mate] left last night without telling me”. So much for mateship. I spent years trying to find my way into their stories. At one stage I spent a year writing 40,000 words before realising it wouldn’t work. I put it aside, then realised one subplot didn’t belong, so extracted it and turned it into a separate novel The Divine Wind, which has sold 100,000 copies around the world, won a major award and been published as both a young adult and a general market novel. But cutting it out like that freed me up to write about the woman and the man betrayed by his mate, in Past the Headlands.’
