Rock My World: A Novel of Thongs, Spandex, and Love in G Minor

Liza Conrad - 2005
Surrounded by lots of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, she's been on the road for as long as she can remember. With a father who was the lead singer of the popular band The Babydolls, and an ex-groupie for a mother, she had no choice but to grow up fast. Now at seventeen, Livy is finally close to having a normal life-until she lands an internship at the music magazine Rock On. Her first assignment? Follow the now-sober, more mature Babydolls across the globe on their reunion tour. It won't be easy to work alongside her dad, who's just now trying to be a responsible father. Armed with a pen, earplugs, and her best friend, Cammie, Livy's back on the road again. To complicate this already-too-complicated situation, her "musicians need not apply" dating rule is getting harder to obey-thanks to the lead singer of her Dad's opening band, who's hot enough to make Livy forget how much she wanted to leave the rock 'n' roll life behind.

The Spires of Dasny: Dragon Riders School

Cheryl Rush Cowperthwait - 2020
I scrambled up the Spires of Dasny, even though I knew it once was a haven for dragons and the old Dragon Riders School. The ground thundered. I trembled in the small niche tucked into the mountain. Had the knights returned? I caught my breath as an enormous green eye peered in. A dragon!I awoke in a deep, dark cavern. Staring at me through one opened eye lay a huge black dragon. I had been taught the stories of the dragons, of the days long ago when they ruled the sky and searched for their riders, but this wasn’t at all what I had been taught. Why was I there? Suddenly, pressure built up in my head. My eyes sprung wide in fear and... I heard him. What happens when three dragon riders come together as told in the prophecy? The Blind, the Healer and the Magician…There are secrets to be uncovered, but only if Seyra is brave enough. Discover the intriguing lives of the brash young Seyra and Dreyth, the one who rescues her--or is it she who rescues him?*I loved this story. It had shades of Anne McCaffery to it - and I loved her books.**This was amazing. I loved this line because it says so much. “One dragon eye slowly opened. It is possible. Sleep now. Sleep heals all things. We will talk later.” This has the beginnings of something grand. So good.**I thought of Anne McCaffrey while reading, so you must be doing something right. I liked the way you gave us all the information we needed without it feeling like an information dump. The section on the dragon riders felt natural.*

The Lonely End of the Rink: Confessions of a Reluctant Goalie

Grant Lawrence - 2013
Grant, his parents, Bobby Orr and the rest of the Canadian hockey team were ontheir way to Game Three of the famous Summit Series -- seven games played between Russia and Canada in 1972, during the height of the Cold War. It was at this point -- at the age of one -- that Grant's life-long entanglement with hockey began. In this deeply personal, yet incredibly witty memoir about Grant's relationship with hockey, the narrative passes back and forth between tales of Grant's life and a fascinating history of hockey, complete with lively anecdotes about the many colourful characters of the NHL. Through Grant's early life, he struggled with the idea of hockey. He was an undersized child who wore thick glasses and knee-braces, and he understood, first-hand, what it was like to be in the attack zone of the hockey-obsessed jocks at his school. For Grant, bullying and the violent game of hockey seemed to go hand-in-hand. Yet he was also enamoured with the sport, and eventually learned that playing goalie on a hockey team isn’t all that different from playing in a band and that artistically-minded wimps find just as much joy in the game as their meathead counterparts. In The Lonely End of the Rink , Grant Lawrence brings the allure of hockey into a zone where it can impress upon the nerds and geeks as well as the jocks. Grant is a highly original writer, and with this book, he tells a quintessentially Canadian story about the nation’s favourite sport.
