In content & method, the book takes into account the needs of the American student in the following order: (1) to understand spoken German & to read without conscious translation even beyond the range of this book; (2) to converse freely on matters of daily life; (3) to write in German on familiar topics, utilizing vocabulary & language patterns already learned. Fairly extensive class testing of the material at Northwestern University leads the authors to believe that everything admitted to final copy contributes to filling these needs.
